| A bit (okay a lot) about me...
I am graduate of philosophy from the University of Calgary. At one time, I was aiming for geophyiscs, but realised that my interests were much broader and interested in The Truth (should such a thing exist) rather than *a* truth as presented by science. As such I have a good working knowledge of physics and geology (who'd thunk that eh?), a sizable rock collection (yep, I'm a geek :) ), and I am also really fond of math (even now I still miss crunching through a complex derviative - hey, I told you I was a geek :) ). At one time I was also persuing a computer science minor, and still carry a special place in my heart for programming - which is why all of my sites are designed on notepad ^^. I will be leaving very soon to travel to Japan to teach English. In the process I hope to expand my thinking and pay off my student loans in one fell sweep. Failing that, I think it will be fun :D
In my free time I enjoy reading books, playing video games (*sigh* I miss being a Sega girl - but Nintendo, specifically my DS, now owns my soul :P), creating computer graphics and watching movies and anime. My book taste tends towards the fantasy and science fiction end of the spectrum and my favourite authors include J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, Anne McCaffrey, Melanie Rawn, Mercedes Lackey, C.S. Lewis and Neil Gaiman. One of these days I'mgoing to get around to writing my own epic, but don't hold your breath. I am admittably obsessed with Middle Earth - my favourite book being the Silmarillion - as such, expect a lot of elvishness going on around here. As far as video games are concerned, I tend to enjoy kicking butt in fighting games (Return of the King is my favourite game, although Soul Calibur 2is a close second), running around in RPG's (yay Final Fantasy: Chrystal Chronicles), and doing both in action/adventure games (The Hobbit so cute!). I am really bad at driving games, and so really don't like them, or perhaps I'm bad at them because I don't like them - although Mario Kart DS is a notable exception! Beyond that, I enjoy making livejournal icons, and designing website layouts. I also create random pixel-pictures and such. Some of my favourite movies include The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Pirates of the Carribean, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, among others. Anime favourites tend to be of the "shoujo" variety and include Angelic Layer, Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Utena, and Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon (not the American version *shudder*). However, I also quite enjoy Ghost in the Shell, Metropolis, and Neon Genesis Evangellion (hey, diversity is good ^^).
In terms of music, I am a fan of U2, Sting, Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Vanessa Mae, Evenessence, and most classical music. I also seem to have a thing for 80's pop (a bit of nostalgia perhaps). I really don't like country, teeny-bopper pop, and boy bands, although there are always exceptions to that, few and far between though they are. |
The Name
The name Istyariel is obviously elvish in origin; considering my adoration of Tolkien's world it shouldn't be too surprising :) I wanted a name that suited my personality, but also fit within Tolkien's world. The interesting thing is, "istyariel" fits very well - in fact, like Galadriel's, this name has meaning in both Quenya (the old tongue) and Sindarin (the noble tongue) and that suits this particular name very well.
The word "ista" means, essentially knowledge in both Quenya and Sindarin. "Istyar" means scholar in Quenya and is related to many words in Sindarin that imply having knowledge. The ending "riel" is a shortened form of the Quenya word "riellë" meaning "a maiden crowned with a festival garland", or just a crowned or garlanded maiden. Further to this, "-iel" is a Sindarin ending formed of "sell" or "daughter" or "maiden"; it was remolded to match the ending "-ion" or "son", and it itself a common feminine name ending.
Thus, the name "istyariel" can mean either a "maiden crowned with knowledge" or "daughter of knowledge" or "scholarly maiden" or, well, you get the point - it has varied, but similar meanings. Although this name is slightly more than pretensious, I also feel that it suits me on many levels, so I do hope you shall forgive my hubris.
It is pronouced ist-YAR-e-l: the emphasis landing on the "yar" with the trilled r.
